AGENDA for the workshop:

Session 1  Redefining Success In Ministry

What is The Grasshopper Myth? (from Numbers 13:32-33) The false impression that our small church ministry is less than what God says it is because we compare ourselves with others.

Three undeniable realities of pastoral ministry:

  • Reality #1: 80-90% of pastors will never pastor a church larger than 250 people
  • Reality #2: 99.9% of pastors will pastor a small church for at least some time in our ministry
  • Reality #3: You can pastor a small church well, without settling for less

  • Bigger fixes nothing
  • We can pastor well under the 200 barrier before trying to break through it
  • Small is not a problem, a virtue or an excuse
  • Bigger is not a plan, a goal or a strategy

Session 2  Thinking Like A Great Small Church

  • Many big church principles don’t translate well to a small church context
  • Many small church principles are specific to each congregation – how to discover yours
  • Big church principles center on process, systems & curriculum
  • Small church principles center on relationships, culture & history
  • Quality looks different in a small church than a big church

Session 3  A New Way To Look At Vision-Casting

  • The Acts 2 model for vision-casting
  • The pastoral prime mandate: to equip God’s people for works of service (Ephesians 4:11-12)
  • The three essential elements of a healthy, effective church
  • How to turn a broken church around by listening to God together

Session 4  Becoming A Heathy Church, No Matter Your Size

  • Don’t just do ministry inthe church, do ministry from the church
  • Discover what your church does well, then do it on purpose
  • Front-load the value: feature what you do well
  • Innovation happens with methods, not style or theology
  • Update your outdated building and methods without compromising your values or costing you a ton of money
  • There will always be a place for great small churches

Session 5  Finding & Mentoring Volunteers In Today’s (And Tomorrow’s) Small Church

  • Challenges and opportunities for the current and future church
  • Raising and working with leaders
  • Mentoring disciples by leveraging the relational power of small churches
  • How small churches are uniquely situated to reach Millennials
